This site has been in the works for about 2 years, but it was around May 2008 when I really wanted to commit to it, as a way to motivate myself and record my journey [or hellish struggle, pending your point of view] to lose weight. I’ve read far, far too many of those stupid ‘inspirational’ weight loss stories about the person who won a competition and got a personal trainer and then they lost weight because someone was hired to kick them in the behind every time they slacked off.
That is not what I want. I have no problem accepting help, none whatsoever, but I think it’s important for me to help myself, too. I’m not going to be the girl who used to sit around and wish I’d win a competition and suddenly transform. Because I realised something, something which has taken a long time to realise — I am the only one who can change who I am.
So I’m in this for the long haul. And, conveniently, I work on this website instead of snacking at night. I don’t care how long it takes me, because I’m determined. Even if it takes me 4 years to get here, I will. I have to. I can’t see the other options.
Name
Why girl? Why pick such a generic name? Because for me, at the end of the day I still don’t know what I want to do or be or really who I am. I guess there’s always been a part of me waiting to come out of my ‘fat shell’ and find out what I can be if I start living up to my whole potential. So maybe somewhere down the track I’ll change the name. Or maybe not. I guess, at the end of the day, regardless of whether I’m fat or skinny I’m still just a girl. And that’s the important part, right?
Links
While I’m not hugely into linking you to all and sundry, I suppose there are a few places that I haunt, which are very helpful if you’re interested.
Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl: Shauna’s blog is a great read if you’re tired of seeing those “I did it, I lost all the weight and it wasn’t hard at all.” I also highly recommend her book, by the same title.
C25K: While I’m pretty sure this isn’t actually the original site, it is the dedicated site for the Couch to 5 Kilometre program. C25K is designed to get you from not doing any running to being able to do it 12 weeks.
GreenLiteBites: A website run by Roni with heaps of interesting meal ideas. Definately a good way to get creative in the kitchen. She uses a lot of artificial sweeteners, which I don’t particularly like (I don’t like sweeteners as an idea), but it’s easy to modify the recipes slightly to replace them.
One Hundred Push Ups: A random challenge to learn to do 100 push ups in 6 weeks. I’m probably close to 3 months on and haven’t done it yet, but I am up to 75, and hope to close the gap by New Years.
Roni’s Weigh: Roni of GreenLiteBites’ website about her experiences with losing weight and getting fit. Very inspirational, since you can read the struggles of someone who has actually done it.
Running Ahead: You can record you runs and note down the time it takes you. It can even give you the cost per kilometre of your shoes.
Tweet, Eat, Post: Roni’s again! Fantastic tool that enables you to use twitter as a posting board for your food journal. Then you can post it straight to your blog, just like I do. Awesome.
